  • Footwear/orthoses review and workplace ergonomics as needed.

4) Bracing & aids

  • Unloader braces for unicompartmental OA; simple knee sleeves for warmth/proprioception.
  • Walking poles or a stick during flares to share load.

5) Medications & injections

  • Short, targeted use of analgesics/anti-inflammatories if appropriate.
  • Corticosteroid injection may help short-term flares to enable rehab.
  • Hyaluronic acid and PRP can be considered in selected patients after discussion of evidence and goals.

Timeline: With consistent rehab and load modification, many patients notice improvement within 6–12 weeks. Failure to progress or severe structural disease may prompt surgical discussion.

Is Arthroscopy Useful for Knee OA?

Arthroscopy is not a routine treatment for established osteoarthritis. It may be considered only in selected scenarios (e.g., true locking from a displaced meniscal fragment or loose body) after specialist review.

Surgical Treatment for Advanced Knee OA
