Hip, knee and shoulder
Conditions we treat
Plain-language guides to the hip, knee and shoulder problems seen at the clinic, what usually helps, and when to see someone. Most of these problems settle with physiotherapy and exercise. Surgery is discussed only when it is likely to give a better result.

Conditions

- Osteonecrosis of the hip (avascular necrosis), early diagnosis helps protect the joint
- Osteoarthritis of the hip, stiffness and less walking comfort

Knee
- Meniscal tear, joint-line pain, catching or locking
- Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury, the knee giving way when you twist or pivot
- Baker’s cyst (popliteal cyst), fullness or tightness behind the knee
- Osteoarthritis of the knee, aching and swelling with activity
- Patellofemoral (kneecap) arthritis, pain on stairs, kneeling and sitting

Shoulder

- Subacromial impingement and bursitis, pain lifting the arm and at night
- Shoulder instability and dislocation, the shoulder slipping out, or feeling as if it might
- SLAP tear and biceps problems, deep clicking or catching, often in throwing sports
- Frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis), the whole shoulder stiff, with a night ache
- AC joint arthritis, pain on top of the shoulder when reaching across the body
- Calcific tendinitis, sudden, severe pain, often at night
- Shoulder osteoarthritis, grinding, stiffness and loss of rotation
- Rotator cuff tendinitis, pain lifting the arm overhead or lying on the shoulder
- Biceps tendinitis, pain at the front of the shoulder, worse with lifting
- AC joint dislocation, pain and a bump on top of the shoulder after a fall
- Scapular dyskinesis, altered shoulder blade movement that can add to shoulder pain

Operations and procedures
- Anterior hip replacement, a muscle-sparing approach for advanced arthritis
- Hip arthroscopy, including labral repair and FAI correction
- Knee replacement, partial and total options with enhanced recovery
- Knee arthroscopy, including meniscus repair and removal of loose bodies
- Subvastus knee replacement, a quadriceps-sparing approach
- Shoulder arthroscopy and rotator cuff repair
- Shoulder replacement, anatomic and reverse options

Good outcomes depend on clear education, progressive exercise and a measured return to activity. The physiotherapy team guides you through each stage, from early recovery to a full return to work or sport.
