Rehabilitation in East Melbourne
Rehabilitation after surgery
A guided physiotherapy program to rebuild strength, movement and confidence after hip, knee or shoulder surgery, at the same clinic where you saw your surgeon.

What rehabilitation does
An operation repairs or replaces the joint, and the muscles around it then need retraining. A structured program helps you get back your range of movement, rebuild strength and return to daily activities, work and sport at a safe pace.
What your program includes
- An assessment of your movement, strength and swelling
- Hands-on treatment and advice on managing pain
- A progressive exercise program, at the clinic and at home
- Biomechanical profile assessment to measure strength side to side and track your progress
- Myotherapy for muscle tightness and overload when it helps
- Plans for returning to driving, work and sport, in line with your surgeon’s advice
Examples of early exercises

Heel slides
Gently bends the knee or hip to win back movement after joint replacement.

Step-ups
Builds leg strength and confidence for stairs and kerbs.

Pendulum swings
Keeps a sore shoulder moving in the early weeks after surgery.
Your physiotherapist chooses and progresses exercises to suit your operation and your surgeon’s instructions.
Operations we help people recover from
Each link opens Prof Phong Tran’s website in a new tab, with more about the operation and the usual recovery.
Working with your surgeon
Your physiotherapist follows the recovery plan set by your surgeon and keeps them up to date on your progress. Prof Phong Tran consults at the same clinic, so any concerns about your recovery can be passed on directly.
Recovery starts in hospital with the ERAS+ enhanced recovery program. When you start at the clinic, and how quickly you progress, depends on your operation and your surgeon’s instructions.

Getting ready before surgery
Building strength before an operation can make the recovery easier. See Prehab, preparing for surgery.
